Spitalfields Silk Dress 1775-85

£1,400.00
Sold Out

A rare English gown of Spitalfields silk circa 1775-85. The silk is patterned with bold florals and subtle stripes. A particularly pretty example, the back of the bodice is fitted with narrow pleats which extend into the back of the skirt. The inside of the skirt has ties which allow it to be pulled up into a “retroussée style”. The front of the skirt is trimmed with two rows of colourful fly fringe. The dress is a very small size and as such I was u able to close the front on my mannequin. As is often the case with many surviving 18th century gowns it was likely altered  from a larger size to fit an adolescent. The dress is generally in good condition for its age. There are numerous stains, small holes and a larger hole which has been patched on the skirt. The shoulder straps and underarms are quite torn.
