A rare large sized 1840s evening dress bodice.
The bodice is made of silk satin with a delicate silk lace overlay pattered with large florals. The bodice is decorated with flounces of silk lace and trimmed with contrasting red ribbons and rosettes. It’s extremely rare to find a surviving example of such a large sized garment and as such it would be particularly useful for taking a pattern suited to modern proportions. The bodice is in good condition for its age having been kept in a trunk by the same family since the 19th century. The silk lace is brittle and has torn in many places but the satin is very sturdy. There are a couple of hooks missing from the back fastening.
