This beautifully Gothic Swiss waist is made of black silk brocade with patterns of daisies and foliage. It would have been worn as a decorative outer corset, like a belt over a dress or blouse. Swiss waists were first popular during the 1860s, but this is a later example from the 1880s or 1890s. It is lined in ivory silk and boned on the interior seams. The corset fastens with lacing down the centre back. The condition is good for its age. The silk is a little worn in places and is fraying near the back left of the lacing; it could be worn carefully.
