Antique Late 1830s Silk Dress
This is a very lovely example of a late 1830s day dress. The dress is made of light brown figured silk. The silk is patterned with a repeating floral motif. The dress has a low neckline, pleated bust detail, and pointed waist. The sleeves are beautifully shaped with smocking to the upper section, pleating around the elbow with the fullness puffing out towards the cuffs. The skirt is very full and interlined with wool padding, which indicates this as a winter dress. The dress fastens down the centre back with hooks and bars, many of which are broken or missing.
The dress is showing signs of age-related wear. The silk has torn in places and has many patches of staining and discolouration. The underarms are especially stained, and the silk is fragile in these areas. The lower edge of the skirt is rather frayed and torn, with the interlining partially exposed around most of the hem. Aside from its age-related damage, this is truly a lovely example of 1830s fashion which still displays beautifully.
