Antique Late 1830's Printed Muslin Dress
A very Brontë-style muslin dress of the late 1830s. The dress is made of soft muslin, woven with a white check, and printed with a geometric seaweed pattern. The bodice has gathering over the bust and into the shoulders. The skirt is full and gathered into the waistband. The majority of the skirt is unlined, but there is a deep cotton facing to the hem. The sleeves have a little fullness which puffs out at the elbow. It looks as if they were originally much bigger and were probably altered to reduce them sometimes after 1840. The dress has many signs of age-related wear; the fine nature of the fabric has made it vulnerable to tears and holes, some of which have old darns, etc. There are also lots of small stains and marks across the dress, although much of this is lost in the busy print. The piping around the neckline has perished, leaving loose string hanging around the edge. Many of the original fastenings are broken or missing. It’s damage aside, this really is such a pretty example.
