Antique 1850s Printed Cotton Morning Gown Wrapper
The dress is made of printed cotton. The bodice has a fitted lining, but the outer front hangs loose and is intended to wrap over at the front and secure with a belt. The dress has long, flared sleeves with deep turn-backed cuffs. The skirt is gathered to the waistband and is very full. There are patch pockets either side of the skirt front. The dress would have been worn informally at home, likely in the morning as a kind of dressing gown before a lady had properly attired herself for the day. The dress is showing signs of age-related damage; there is lots of staining and discolouration to the fabric. There are some holes and tears; the cotton is especially brittle around the shoulders of the bodice. Some of this area appears to have been patched from the inside. There are further patches to the lower right skirt front. The dress is of good size and proportion and it displays beautifully on a mannequin, although I would say the fabric is too fragile to withstand being worn.
