The dress is made of a thick cotton twill. It would have been worn as an underlayer and as such is very simple with minimal decoration. In the early 19th century, this type of garment was often referred to as a bodied petticoat. Its simple yet skilful construction makes it an excellent piece for study regarding cut and construction. It is also perfect for displaying underneath a sheer or muslin dress of the same date. The bodice is cut on the bias and creates a very rounded bust, popular during the 1820s. The waistband fastens with hooks, and there are pocket slits in the sides of the skirt. A beautiful and rare piece of early 19th-century clothing. The dress is in good condition; there are a few very small stains, but aside from that, it’s in excellent shape.
