A fragile, yet rare, ladies’ evening dress of circa 1810. The dress is made of fine silk satin, which has been embellished with silver spangles, which have now tarnished. The dress fastens at the back with little silk-covered buttons. The dress is sadly a shadow of its former splendour. There have been significant later and badly executed alterations by which someone has added silk at the side of the bodice and under sleeves to enlarge the dress. This has rather distorted the original shape of the bodice. There are many stains and tears across the silk, and patches reinforcing the shoulders. I would estimate as much as 40% of the original spangles are missing, and more seem to fall off every time the dress is moved. Because of this, it is not ideal for display, but as this style of dress is such a rarity, it still has much beauty to be studied and admired.
Approximate measurements
