19th Century British Court Suit
The suit consists of a wool tailcoat, wool breeches and embroidered silk waistcoat. The coat is decorated with cut steel buttons down the front, under the faux pocket flats, and at the back pleats. The high standing collar has a decorative silk ribbon wig bag attached to the back of the neck. The interior of the coat is lined with cream silk. The sleeves have gathered lace to the cuffs.
The silk waistcoat is densely embroidered with colourful flowers and fastens with little covered buttons. The back of the waistcoat is made of cotton and has linen ties to adjust the fit.
The breeches are unlined but there is a cotton facing at the waist concealing two small pockets. The breeches fastens at the centre front with hidden buttons, the leg openings with little cut steel buttons and buckles.
The suit is accompanied by a lace ruffle insert to worn at the neck as well as several other accessories, stocking, sash and collar.
Although earlier in style, the suit likely dates from the mid to late 19th century, the court suit remained a fixture of formal court attire until the First World War.
The quality and construction would make it an extremely beautiful costume for anyone wishing to dress for regency era reenactment etc.
The suit is in good condition for its age. For the most part the wool has suffered very little moth damage. There is only a couple of small holes I can see on the coat and breeches. The silk coat lining has stains and some tears under the arms. There’s a little rust on one or two buttons, but most look in perfect condition having been wrapped in paper to prevent tarnishing. The waistcoat has some faint stains to the silk there is also some shattering to the silk around the armpits.
