For sale, a Robe à l’anglaise circa 1780. The gown is made of figured silk taffeta, striped with gradient shades of pink. The silk is striking and so quintessentially Georgian. The bodice is lined in linen. The sleeves are partially lined and the skirt has a silk facing at the hem. Construction typical of English gowns in the late 1770s / early 1780s. The back of the bodice has extremely narrow pleats which extend into the skirt fullness. The skirt has silk cork and loops sewn it which allow the skirt to be pulled up in the retroussée style. The dress is of unusually large proportion with the bust measuring over 40 inches making it an even more remarkable survivor. Good condition for its age. Minor faint stains and some small splits to silk along seam lines ect.
